Staircase Painting Services

Balusters and Spindles

Turned balusters in Victorian and Edwardian properties accumulate thick paint over decades. The original timber profile is often barely visible beneath the build-up.

We sand back along the profile using flexible abrasives that follow the curves. Getting the balusters right is the most time-consuming part of a staircase repaint. We do not rush this stage.

Handrail and Newel Post

The handrail is the most touched surface on the staircase. It needs a hard-wearing, wipeable finish that stays smooth through constant handling. We use a satin or semi-gloss enamel on handrails.

The newel post is a feature piece. On Victorian and Edwardian properties in the Christchurch area and Woodbridge, the newel post is often original and substantial. We apply the finish in thin, even coats.

Stair Risers and Treads

Stair risers are in the direct line of sight when you enter a hallway. A clean, freshly painted riser makes the whole staircase look well-maintained.

Where risers and string boards are painted, we use a durable semi-gloss finish that resists marks. Treads with natural timber finishes or carpet are left unpainted.

Victorian and Edwardian Staircases

Victorian and Edwardian properties across Ipswich have original timber staircases with profile detail worth restoring. Converting a tired, paint-clogged balustrade into a clean, crisp feature is one of the most rewarding jobs in period property decoration.

Here’s How It Works

1. Assessment

We examine the staircase and note the paint build-up on balusters, the handrail condition, and any areas of chipping or peeling. The preparation approach is confirmed before work starts.

2. Dust Sheeting

The staircase is a working access route during the job. We sheet carefully and maintain access to one side at all times where layout allows.

3. Preparation

Balusters are sanded along the profile with flexible abrasive. The handrail is flatted back to a stable surface. Newel posts and string boards are prepared individually.

4. Priming

All bare timber and unstable surface areas are primed before the finish coat. Handrail and newel posts get a dedicated hard-wearing primer.

5. Finish Coats

Two finish coats are applied with drying time between each. The handrail gets a hard-wearing satin or semi-gloss finish. We check all surfaces before leaving.
