Hallway Painting Services
Victorian and Edwardian hallways carry more features per square metre than any other room. Cornicing, picture rails, dado mouldings, and multiple door frames all need cutting in by hand. We work ceiling to floor, completing the ceiling first and then the walls zone by zone.
Hallway Walls and Ceiling
Hallways are the first space visitors see. A well-finished hallway sets the tone for the whole property.
Dado Rails and Picture Rails
Dado rails and picture rails divide the hallway wall into zones, each typically painted in a different colour. Clean lines on either side of the rail are essential in a narrow space.
Staircase Walls
Staircase walls in Victorian terraces are awkward to reach without proper access equipment. We use access boards and trestles to reach the full height of the stairwell safely.
For the staircase structure itself, see our staircase painting page.
Scuff-Resistant Finishes
Hallways take more wear than any other room. We use durable eggshell or satin emulsions in hallways where clients want a surface that wipes clean.
Narrow Hallway Solutions
Narrow hallways need a different approach to standard rooms. Working in a space less than a metre wide requires careful organisation to avoid stepping in wet paint.

Here’s How It Works

1. Assessment
We walk the hallway and stairwell and note ceiling height, original features, surface condition, and access needs.
2. Access Setup
Floors and stairs are protected with dust sheets before any work starts. Access boards are set up for stairwell walls.
3. Preparation
Walls are filled and sanded. Original lime plaster gets a breathable primer. Cornicing and rails are masked where needed.
4. Painting Sequence
Ceiling first, then upper wall zone, then main wall zone, then dado zone, then all woodwork including skirting and door frames.

Hallway Painting Costs in Ipswich
Hallway and stairwell repaints vary significantly by height, period features, and scope. Three things drive the price: ceiling height (Victorian hallways with high ceilings need access equipment beyond a standard step ladder), period features (cornicing, picture rails, dado mouldings, and deep skirting boards all add hand-finishing time), and stairwell height.
Ground Floor Hallway
Kesgrave 1990s semi, standard ceiling, no period features: £280 to £420, walls and ceiling.
Hallway and Stairwell
Maidstone Road Victorian terrace, two storeys, with cornicing and picture rail: £650 to £950, including ceiling, walls, and all woodwork.
Full Hallway, Stairwell, and Landing
Rushmere St Andrew detached, three storeys: £900 to £1,400 depending on access requirements and scope.
