Rendered Walls
Rendered facades are common across Stoke Park’s 1930s and 1950s semis. Many 1970s to 1990s properties in Kesgrave and Bramford also have render.
Render left undecorated for many years develops biological staining, surface cracking, and hollow areas. We check the render condition before quoting and make repairs.
Exposed Brick
Exposed brick walls can be painted with a breathable masonry paint. Non-breathable products cause trapped moisture, salt leaching, and mortar deterioration.
Victorian brick terraces in the Christchurch area and commercial brick buildings in town have different brick densities. We assess and specify the correct product at the site visit.
Stone Facades
Natural stone facades near Nacton and Woodbridge need a breathable lime-wash or breathable masonry paint.
Standard acrylic masonry paints are not compatible with natural stone and historic lime mortar. We advise on the correct paint system for each stone type.
Breathable Coatings
Ipswich’s medieval town centre has pargeted buildings and timber-framed structures standing for centuries. Applying a standard acrylic masonry paint traps moisture and accelerates decay.
We choose the right system for each surface: lime-based coatings for original render, mineral-based for stone, and breathable silicone-based for timber-framed infill panels.
Biological Growth Treatment
Inspection & Assessment
Biological growth on masonry must be treated before repainting. Painting over algae or mould seals the growth in and causes the new paint to fail from behind.
Mould Treatment
We apply a mould treatment to all affected areas and allow dwell time. The surface is cleaned and confirmed biologically clean before priming.
Quality Finish
Proper treatment ensures your new masonry paint bonds well and lasts many years. For the full exterior process, see our exterior painting page.

Here’s How It Works
1. Surface Assessment
We inspect all masonry surfaces. Render condition, crack locations, hollow areas, biological growth, and existing paint type are all noted.
2. Repair
Cracks are filled with flexible exterior filler matched to the surface texture. Hollow render is hacked back and made good with appropriate mortar.
3. Biological Treatment
Mould treatment is applied to all affected areas and allowed dwell time. The surface is cleaned and rinsed before applying any primer.
4. Priming
A masonry primer suited to the surface type is applied. Historic and porous surfaces get a penetrating primer.
5. Finish Coats
Two finish coats of the agreed masonry paint are applied. High-exposure east-facing elevations may get a third coat.
