Dryness Check

We assess the plaster or plasterboard for moisture before starting. A dark patch test or moisture meter confirms readiness. We do not start too early.

Sealing Coat

A diluted sealing coat is applied to all new plaster and plasterboard surfaces. This seals porosity and creates a stable base for finish coats.

First and Second Finish Coats

Full-strength finish coats are applied once the sealing coat is dry. The second coat is applied after adequate drying time for a smooth, even finish with consistent colour across the whole wall.

New plaster should dry until it turns a consistent pale colour throughout. This typically takes two to four weeks depending on temperature, ventilation, and plaster thickness. We assess at the site visit and do not start on damp plaster.

What is the difference between a sealing coat and regular emulsion?

A sealing coat is the same emulsion diluted with water, typically three parts paint to one part water. The dilution allows it to soak into porous new plaster. Standard emulsion cannot penetrate adequately.

How many coats does new plaster need?

New plaster needs a sealing coat plus two full finish coats as a minimum. Previously painted walls typically need two finish coats. The extra coat on new plaster is what achieves an even result.
