Solid Wood vs MDF Cabinets
Solid wood and MDF cabinet doors need different preparation and primer systems. Solid wood has open grain that absorbs primer unevenly if not sanded correctly.
MDF edges are highly porous and need a dedicated MDF primer before any finish coat. Getting the primer right on each material separates a lasting result from one that chips within a year.
Spray-Painted Doors
For the smoothest possible finish, doors can be removed and spray-painted off-site or in situ. Spray application gives a factory-smooth, brush-mark-free result on flat-panel and shaker-style doors.
Where spray is not practical, we use a brush-and-roller hybrid technique. A small foam roller applies the product and a brush back-rolls to level the surface before it sets.
Colour Selection
A kitchen colour change is a significant visual refresh. Popular choices include deep greens, navy blues, and off-whites.
We advise on how colours read in the specific kitchen light at the site visit. A colour that looks perfect on a chip can read very differently across 30 cabinet doors.
Cabinet Painting vs Replacement
A full kitchen replacement costs considerably more than cabinet repainting. Where the carcasses are sound and the layout works, cabinet painting is the logical choice.
This gives a full refresh at a fraction of the cost of a refit. We advise honestly at the site visit if cabinets are not worth painting.
Material Assessment
We assess the door material at the site visit and choose primer and finishing materials accordingly. Using the same product on both wood and MDF is not the correct approach.
Here’s How It Works
1. Assessment
We examine the cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and carcasses. We confirm the material, the existing finish condition, and the colour direction. The scope is agreed in writing.
2. Degreasing
Kitchen cabinets accumulate grease on door surfaces, especially around handles. Thorough degreasing is the most important preparation step. No primer bonds correctly to a greasy surface.
3. Sanding
All surfaces are sanded with appropriate grit to key the existing finish. MDF edges are sanded progressively to close the grain before priming.
4. Priming
The correct primer for the material is applied and allowed to cure fully before any finish coat. MDF gets a dedicated MDF primer. Solid wood gets a wood primer or shellac-based product where needed.
5. Finish Coats
Two finish coats are applied with drying time between each. The final result is inspected in good light before handles and hardware are reinstated.

What Drives the Price
Door and drawer count, material and condition, and finish method all impact cost. Preparation is where cost varies most. Brush-and-roller hybrid is the standard; spray finishing adds cost but gives a smoother result.
