Deck Painting Services
Decking Boards
Decking boards need a penetrating oil or stain rather than a surface film paint. A penetrating product soaks into the timber and protects from within.
We use penetrating decking oils and stains suited to the timber species. Softwood boards need a different product from hardwood.
Cleaning and Preparation
New decking stain or oil applied to a dirty surface will seal the dirt in. We clean boards thoroughly with a deck cleaner and a stiff brush or pressure washer.
Algae-covered boards on north-facing sections get a mould treatment first to kill growth at the root.
Balustrades, Steps, and Handrails
Deck balustrades and handrail sections are painted or stained to match the boards. Handrails get a hard-wearing stain or exterior paint that resists handling and weathering.
Deck Staining
Contemporary garden colour palettes have moved beyond traditional deck brown. Slate grey, charcoal, and warm oak tones are popular across Westerfield and Rushmere St Andrew.

Anti-Slip Finishes & Covered Outdoor Decking

Anti-Slip Finishes
Shaded deck areas that stay damp in spring and autumn become hazardous without anti-slip treatment. We add anti-slip aggregate to the decking oil or stain on any slip-risk section.
This is standard practice on north-facing boards and steps.
Covered Outdoor Decking
Decks under pergolas or veranda covers benefit from the same protective coating as exposed decks. Protected areas dry faster and require less frequent recoating than fully exposed sections.
Composite Decking
Composite decking is typically not painted. It is manufactured with a UV-stable surface that does not need a coating. We do not recommend painting composite decking to change its colour.
Colour Options
For fence painting alongside the deck, we can schedule both in one visit. We bring colour samples to the site visit for reference.
Here’s How It Works
1. Assessment
We inspect the deck for structural integrity, surface condition, and biological growth. We note shaded sections and steps needing anti-slip treatment.
2. Cleaning
Boards are cleaned with a deck cleaner and stiff brush. Algae sections get a mould treatment and are allowed dwell time before rinsing.
3. Drying
The deck is left to dry fully before any stain or oil is applied. Damp timber cannot absorb a penetrating product correctly.
4. Application
Decking oil or stain is applied with a brush, working along the grain. Two coats are standard. Anti-slip aggregate is added to the first coat on slip-risk sections.
5. Inspection
We check all boards for even penetration and consistent colour. Any areas of missed coverage or uneven application are corrected before leaving.
